2023 Independent Football Preview

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

Predicted Order of Finish

1. Notre Dame- the offense lost coordinator Tommy Rees and both QB’s from last year but picked up 6-year Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman (110 career TD’s) who will be protected by a stout O-line, the school’s all-time sacker leader Isaiah Foskey is gone and revered special teams coach Brian Mason left for the NFL OVER/UNDER Total Wins 8.5

2. Army- the Black Knights return a talented group of WR’s along with an experienced O-line which should help the offense make the transition from the triple option to a shotgun attack under new coordinator Drew Thatcher, the defense lost its’ only real pass rusher in Andre Carter II and captain Marquel Broughton at DB OVER/UNDER Total Wins 5.5

3. Connecticut- the Huskies, who exceeded expectations in HC Jim Mora’s 1st season, have plenty of talented options at RB and get junior Ta’Quan Roberson back at QB after suffering a season ending injury in the 2022 opener, the WR’s are mostly unproven transfers and sustaining success as an Independent will be a challenge OVER/UNDER Total Wins 4.5

3. Massachusetts- defensive minded HC Don Brown returns 8 starters on that side of the ball led by first team All-Independent CB Jordan Mahoney (3 INT’s, 1 TD), the QB position was a revolving door in 2022 and could remain that way entering this year while the backfield lost top RB Ellis Merriweather (575 yards, 3 TD’s) OVER/UNDER Total Wins 2.5

Buy- None

Sell- Connecticut- a daunting schedule could set the Huskies back after last year’s surprise bowl appearance

Best Bet- Connecticut UNDER Total wins
